NEXT MEETING and HAPPY NEW YEAR

Our next meeting is on Monday 27th January .  We have been fortunate enough to secure the Suitcase Collection of the Quilters Guild Contemporary Quilt Group.  The name of this series is "On the Road".  

This is an opportunity to see work by these talented members up close and personal and the quilts are accompanied with working notes on design and inspiration.  We are looking forward to exploring these little works of Art.

The Meeting starts at 10 a.m. with Coffee and biscuits before we explore the contents of the suitcase.

Hope to see plenty of you and always welcome visitors as well as members.

Advance Notice  :  The March meeting on the 23rd is an all day workshop with Annette Bolton when she will be taking us through the making of a Redwork Needlebook.  The cost of this workshop is £15 for Members and £20 for visitors.  If you are interested and would like to be put on the workshop list please get in touch.  A £10 deposit will be required from all participants.

The list of requirements will be published as soon as Annette has given them to us.

All day meeting on Monday 25th November

The Meeting taking place on Monday 25th November will be an all day workshop with Ann Jones entitled 'Jazzy Squares'.  Usual time 10 a.m. till 4 p.m.  with a break for refreshments at lunch time.  Please bring your own packed lunch, tea and coffee will be provided.

You will need to bring the following items:

Heat'n'Bond.  18" x 18"  There will be some available to buy on the day if you dont have any,
Pencil
Long Ruler
Strips of gliTzy fabrics 18" x 1 & 1/4 - 2 INCHES e.g. silk, satin, ribbons, gold, silver
Sewing Machine
Sewing kit
Background fabric

The December meeting will be on 16th December.  Please note that this is the third (3rd) Monday not the usual 4th.

This will include the Christmas Challenge (Red and Green)  no big quilts please.

For the Christmas gnome you will need to bring:  card and pencil to make template, Scraps of Christmas fabric. Pink felt.Stuffing. Wadding or fluff for beard.  Ribbon for hanging.  Sewing kit.  Machine if desired. PVA glue with fine nozzle.

EXHIBITION 2019

The Bieannual Exhibition of the Hardy Quilters will take place at Osmington Village Hall,  Shortlake Lane, Osmington, Weymouth DT3 6EF on Monday 24th June from 10 a.m - 4 p.m.  Entrance is £3 which includes refreshments so hang on to your ticket!

There will be the usual stalls including Tombola and Demonstrations and of course the wonderful Traders who are going to be with us on the day.  Bits and Bobs who are local and have a lovely shop on the Portland Road, Wyke Regis and SeaHorse who come from further afield and were with us at our last Exhibition.

We have some new members who have joined us within the last twelve months and they will be showing their creations alongside our regular Exhibitors.

We look forward to welcoming you and sharing our creativity with you.

NOVEMBER 2018 WORKSHOP

The workshop scheduled for November 26th meeting is with Textile Artist Wendy Hermelin.  This comes highly recommended as Wendy produces the most beautiful work using collage techniques and both hand and machine stitch.

CLAIRE PASSMORE - Workshop on 23rd October.

We are more than pleased to welcome Claire Passmore back to Hardy Quilters for another of her wonderful workshops.

This will be a surface design techniques full day workshop 10.00 a.m. - 4.00 p.m. (with a break for Lunch).  The cost will be Members £15 and Non-Members £25.


REQUIREMENTS LIST

Claire will be bringing kits with her at a cost of £6.

Apron.  Small washing up bowl.   Newspaper.  Carrier Bag.  Loo roll.  Rags to clean.  Baby wipes.  Kitchen sponges.  Plain white cotton/polycotton fabric.

4 colours of artist acrylic paint, not little tubes.  Freezer paper.  Masking tape.  Craft knife and spare blades.  Small scissors  Biro and Sharpie type black pens.  Drawing paper. 5B or 6B and 2H or 3H pencils.

Glue Stick.  Old hand towel.  Cutting mat.  Jam jar with lid.  

Many of these things can be shared with friends.  The Works or Range sell cheap acrylic paint.

This promises to be an exciting experimental day with one of our favourite Textile Artist/Quilter.

EXHIBITION PICTURES.

Theses are pictures of part of the Exhibition that was set up in memory of Del Whitfield one of our founder members who sadly passed away quite recently.  This is only a fraction of her work.  Many of us had no idea of the extent of her many and varied creations.    She just quietly got on with what she wanted to do without a lot of fuss.  She was very active within the Group and was always off taking part in various workshops.  We miss her very much.

Guess the name of the Pub challenge

On behalf of the Committee I would like to express thanks to all those members that volunteered to help during what was two busy days.  We would not have managed without you, and your help was very much appreciated.  So very often it is left to the same people to take the load of all the work and this is just not fair.  Everything is done for the good of the Hardy Quilters and its members therefore it would be very gratifying if more people volunteered to help at times if only to make tea and coffee which is all provided and just amounts to boiling a kettle.

Our next meeting is on Monday September 25th and is the Annual General Meeting, usual time 10 a.m.    After the business there will be a mini workshop led by Ann Jones.

WE ARE BACK

It has been a long time since the last Blog post due to all kinds of unforeseen circumstances but we are back now.
We are staging our Biannual Open Day and Exhibition this weekend and today we had lots of lovely visitors to see all the lovely exhibits and eat some delicious home cooked cakes.

AGM Report.

The AGM  was poorly attended this year which was disappointing as this was the 25th Anniversary of the Group and to mark the occasion Ann Jones had made a special cake for us all to enjoy.  Photographs were taken of founder members that were present cutting the cake and this will be sent to the local paper.
After all the usual business we had a display of small quilts from the Quilters Guild Contemporary Group Suitcase Collection.  The title of the challenge was 'All in a Days Work' and when opened the suitcase revealed many little treasures.

These suitcase collections that are available to hire from the Quilters Guild are a great talking point and the work is very diverse.

Our new programme has been arranged and I have added it to the Diary.  Maureen has worked very hard to get a an interesting programme together and we hope that members and visitors will be interested and pleased with the workshops and talks on offer.

Our next meeting is on October 17th when we are very pleased to welcome Textile Artist Elizabeth Sayers.  Elizabeth will be talking about her work with 'The Landscape in Textiles'.  Some of you may already know of Elizabeth and her work as she exhibits during Dorset Arts Weeks at Othona Community.  Her work is stunning and it will be very interesting to get an insight into how she goes about creating it.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING  :  Monday 19th September 2016.

Our next meeting is for our Annual General Meeting on Monday 19th September at Osmington Village Hall.  10 a.m.  Coffee and Biscuits followed by Meeting. 

At the conclusion of the meeting there will be a display of Quilts made by the Contemporary Quilt Group of the Quilters Guild.

All welcome - present members, visitors and prospective members.  Membership fee for 2016/17 is £25.00. 

JUNE 20TH

Our next meeting is on Monday 20th June at our usual time and place.  This meeting will be an all day workshop with KATE DOWTY. The workshop called 'PEBBLES' will be to create an original wallhanging in three sections in a colour range of your choice.

WORKSHOP REQUIREMENTS

Fabrics:

Choose colours that blend well together such as a range of blues or greens or reds etc.

Neutral colours will also work.  Then select your fabrics from within that colour range.

Plain fabrics, especially hand dyes, work best but minimally patterned fabrics (such as Moda Marbles) can be included as well.

You will need:

1.   Around 1/3 metre of plain coloured fabric

2.   Around 1/3 metre of a shiny fabric such as metallic or lame or similar
3.    Around 1/3 metre of a matt finish fabric, such as cotton velvet or linen

4.   Around 1/3 metre of netin gold, silver, bronze or, alternatively, a sheer fabric

5.   Lots of smaller pieces of cotton in colours to blend with your colour theme, with a mix of lighter and and darker shades.

6 . If you have fabrics in your stash that you are unsure about, bring them along anyway.  They might be perfect!

In addition you will need:

7.   General sewing kit, safety pins etc.

8.   Sewing machine, including free machining foot:

9.   Rotary cutter and cutting mat.

10. A selection of fabrics in a coordinating colour range, see above.

11.  Bondaweb

12.  Backing fabric and wadding, approx. 1 metre of each

13.  Beads to match the metallic fabrics used

14.  Yarns for couching, variegated if possible

15.  Shiny beads for embellishment

NEXT MEETING - Monday 21st March.

This meeting will be dedicated to 'Fidget' quilts.  Bev Flawith and a friend are coming from Christchurch to inspire us with their stories of the Fidget quilts that they make and we hope that this will get our Session underway and be really productive. 

Fidget quilts are made by adding tactile materials such zips, buttons, beads, plastic, and anything with a pleasant texture.  The quilts are then donated for use by Alzhiemer patients and the like.

We hope that as many of you as possible can come to help with this project.  Please bring anything that you have that can be used by yourself and also items suitable for donation to Bev for the scheme.

Plus your usual sewing kit, fabrics and sewing machine.

I am sure you will all agree that this is a very worthwhile project and be willing to help us make this a really productive and enjoyable day.

JANUARY 2016

Happy New Year to everyone and my apologies for not posting for the last couple of months.  I have been recovering from a small operation and lacked the get up and go to get on with it.

Here are pictures of our Christmas challenge:

Our first meeting of the New Year is on Monday 18th January.  This will be a 'sit and sew' day when members can bring their own things to get on with or take part in a in house workshop.  This will be a workshop on making a Thread Catcher.  The requirements list is as follows:

1 Fat Quarter

1 4" wood embroidery hoop (inside ring only)

Light weight cardboard (big enough for (2) 4" circles)

Lightweight wadding for (1) 4" circle

Matching Thread.

Sewing Machine

Usual sewing kit

Cutting board and pencil.

INGRID ELLIS WORKSHOP

Today we had our workshop with Ingrid Ellis entitled 'Getting to Know your Sewing Machine'.  This was certainly true in my case as I have recently purchased a new to me Bernina 380. I was keen to have this machine as it has lots of extra stitches stored for decorative stitching and this workshop was the ideal time to practise.

Ingrid brought along samples of her lovely work and explained the processes and soon we were on our way to creating our own little works of Art.

OCTOBER 2015

The October meeting will be on Monday 26th October a week later than usual.  Ingrid Ellis will be coming to give us a workshop entitled 'Know your Sewing Machine'.  

The requirements list is as follows:

Sewing machine, extension lead, spare bobbins, spare needles, manual.  If your box of feet includes an embroidery foot and/or couching foot, this will be very helpful.

Usual sewing kit (scissors, large and small, embroidery needles, etc)

Fabric marker (blue water erasable is good, but fine chalk will be ok)

Fabrics:-

Cotton top fabric to your taste (pattern should not be too loud but more wishy-washy - batik fabric is good

Cotton backing fabric (will not be seen)

Second cotton backing fabric (will be seen at the back)

Wadding - should be low loft

All fabrics should be A4 size plus 4cm all round as margin

Bring a sandwich of top, wadding and backing fabric with you to practise stitches on.

For embellishments:-

Cords (thickness of shoe-laces)

narrow ribbon

ric-rac

lace

rat-tail cord

beads (not too large)

all either toning or contrasting with your top fabric

Machine sewing threads to tone and contrast with your top fabric as well as metallics if you have them

Hand embroidery threads as above (stranded or perle)

It will help you if you know the effects of the different stitches your machine can do.  If you have a sample of them, bring the sample.

*Tutor will bring an assortment of embroidery threads.

Please bring a packed Lunch.  Tea and Coffee will be available.

Cost:  £10 members   :  non-members £15.
