The Exhibition was a great success and we were kept busy all day.  Thank you to everyone who came to support us.  We are on our Summer Break now.  The next meeting is on Monday September 16th when we shall meet for our Annual General Meeting.

REQUIREMENTS LIST FOR MONDAY'S WORKSHOP

On Monday 15th we have a workshop scheduled for the morning with Barbara Cheeseman.  Here is her requirements list.  Hope to see you there.

BRILLIANT BAGS WORKSHOP - Barbara Cheeseman.
The workshop has 2  parts - creating a piece of fabric, and making a bag with it.
The fabric is made by laying lots of scraps and bits, threads etc. on to a foundation fabric, (bondawebbed if you like) covering with organza, chiffon or net and machine stitching all over it to trap the bits and decorate the surface.  The foundation fabric tends to get covered up so colour etc. doesn't matter much.  You can do free stitching, or use the auto stitches on your machine.  If you  have never done any free machining there might not be time to learn at this workshop but great results can be achieved using auto stitches or even just straight stitch.  If free stitching you need  a firm enough foundation fabric to take it, or a piece of thin wadding/felt/Lidl wiping cloth.
Decide on size of bag - I suggest 6" x 16" or a bit bigger as doable in the day.  The bag is made by folding a rectangle in 3, one end is the flap.  The bigger it is the longer it will take to stitch over.
SCRAPS can be plain, patterned, glitzy, gold bits, lace, strips or chunks.  Some are more sheer than others you don't want to disguise your bits completely, though a dominant colour can be taken down a bit with stitching.
SEWING THREADS - several -  rayon - metallic - multicolour, matching and/or contrast.  Normal sewing thread for sewing the bag together.
SEWING MACHINE, SPARE NEEDLES, DARNING FOOT ETC.PINS, SCISSORS, HAND SEWING KIT
LARGE BUTTON OR SUITABLE BEAD FOR FASTENING
THICK THREAD, BOUGHT OR WRAPPED CORD OR BRAID FOR HANDLE/HANGING STRAP.  Could bring threads to make a twisted cord, or strip of fabric to fold over and stitch.  I will bring a gadget for twisting cords.
I will bring some of most of these things so if you are stuck you can use mine.
Don't agonise for ages over choice of materials, it changes with each step and everything looks good in the end.  What shows most is the covering sheer and the stitching, and a general impression of colour.

FEBRUARY 17TH MEETING

Today's meeting was very successful and was well attended.  Kate Dowty is a very popular quilter and textile artist. Today we were 'playing  with paintsticks' and we were happy to see and welcome a lot of non-members who had travelled some distance to take part.  I took a lot of photographs during the day and have put these into a video.  As you will see it shows the progression of the workshop with almost finished pieces at the end. 

A big thank you to Kate and everyone who came to support us.  I think everyone went away feeling pleased with what they had learnt and accomplished.  The challenge now is to finish the pieces and have them ready for our Workshop Corner in the Exhibition to be held in June.

I would like to add here that Kate Dowty is having a solo exhibition at the Old Church at Eype from the 13th - 28th April.  I saw this Exhibition at the Festival Quilts last year and it was simply wonderful and I would urge anyone who is able to go to see her in April.  You won't be disappointed.

Last but by no means least a reminder that for the March meeting there will be a mini workshop led by Ann Jones - 'Happy Village'.  If you would like more details and a requirements list please get in touch either by email or telephone.  If you would prefer not to take part in the workshop but get on with your own project please feel free to bring whatever you like.  If you are stuck with something perhaps someone will be able to help you.  A few heads are better than one and sometimes just talking  with like-minded people works wonders.

FIRST MEETING OF THE NEW YEAR

Monday 21st January is our first meeting of the New Year 2013.  This will be a sit and sew day when we will catch up with each other's news and have a look at what people have be doing over the break.  It is also a good day to bring out those UFO's or maybe seek advice and ideas about a new project.

Also a reminder about our February meeting when we will have an all day workshop with Kate Dowty entitled ' Playing with Paintsticks'.  If you haven't already signed up for this and would like to take part please get in touch as soon as possible.  This is proving a very popular workshop as Kate is such a wonderful teacher so we don't want to disappoint anyone.

The following photographs are from today's Christmas Party meeting.   Ann Jones led a workshop on a quick Pineapple Block technique.

This photograph shows some of the Table Runners that were made for the Challenge competition.  The first one on the table made by Ann Jones was the winner and below are a couple of detail photographs.

This was our last meeting of 2012 and we had a lovely day together with mince pies and sausage rolls, and we look forward to our first meeting of the New Year.  This will be a 'sit and sew' day when we can work on our own projects and catch up with each other's holiday news.  In February we have an all day Talk and Workshop with Kate Dowty.  The subject is 'Playing with Paintsticks'.  If you would like to take part in this workshop please email or telephone 01305 786801 to reserve a place and a booking form will be sent to you.  Please be sure to include your contact address in your email or message.

CRAFT FAIR

On Saturday 1st December we will be at St. Andrews Church Rooms, Preston where they are holding a Craft Fair in aid of the Hospital League of Friends.  We will have items on display that have been made by some of our Members and there will be small items for sale.  This is an ideal opportunity to find out more about the Hardy Quilters and to see what we do.   This Craft Fair is for a very worthy cause so do please try to come along.  It is open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
